Preventing the Natural Weathering Process of Wood
Preventing the Natural Weathering Process of Wood
When exposed to the elements, untreated lumber on a deck naturally changes
color. This “weathering” is actually a very complex combination of chemical,
mechanical, biological, and light-induced process, which interact and change
not only the physical appearance of the wood, but the integrity of the
wood as well.
Moisture, sunlight (ultraviolet radiation), temperature, atmospheric pollution and airborne fungal spores all cause wood to begin the process of decomposition. These factors combine to physically and chemically attack the molecular structures that hold wood together. Once the wood surfaces turn gray, if left “as is”, the wood will continue to erode.
Decks are particularly susceptible to damage from weathering because, in addition to foot traffic, their horizontal surfaces hold rain-water, snow, and dew for longer periods of time, accelerating the damage. Deck floors also get 40 to 50 percent more UV radiation from sunlight than vertical surfaces.
Pressure washing alone has never been an effective means to cleaning and restoring wood. According to the national Forest Products Association, 95 percent of contractors selling deck restoration services are doing it wrong. We at Clean Seal USA consider people who just blast away at the wood to be like vandals – they do more harm than good by breaking down the wood which causes it to splinter and deteriorate.
The key to restoring your wood project is to clean it properly first. Oxidation needs to be removed and our cleaner will do all of this. After you have invested in this cleaning process the proper thing to do is to seal the wood with our Nano Technology Sealant. Our sealer bonds molecularly with the wood and therefore becomes permanent. Following this process makes continuous maintenance obsolete.
We prefer that you spend your time enjoying the natural beauty of your wood without all the headaches and high maintenance.
